When parents seek to establish legal rights and responsibilities, whether married or not, a court order must establish those rights and responsibilities. When parents are unable to agree on this, a parenting investigation (evaluation) may be ordered by the court. A parenting investigation is an impartial assessment of your family and its members concerning the strengths and weaknesses of each parent. This process is focused on the best interest of the child.
